Do you believe that social media has increased the quality of new and information or decreased it?
In my opinion I think it has increased the quality of media in many ways and also has decreased the quality of news in many ways. Back in the day there was only one way of hearing about the news and it was through the radio. Then came the television and now you have too many sources through social media. It decreased because different networks are used such as twitter and facebook for news by tv channels such as CP24 or CityNews and from they tweet or post on facebook could contradict what other channels tweet or post causing confusion in people and who rely on the news. One can never know which information's right and what's not. Also by using these networks to spread news, more and more people have started reading or watching the news but many have stopped since they seem to think that the information is faulty.
The positive part of using social media for news is that the news gets around way faster than it would through just television or the radio. Since majority of the people use social networks these days, they all pass on the news that shocks them and eventually people hear about it. One can never tell which one's the rumor and which one's that actual news.
I totally agree with your post Waqar, and how the use of social media increases the quality of news and information as well as decreasing it as well. I forgot that people used to find out about world news through the radio first before they even got the chance to turn on the television. Now a day’s world news can be accessed all over the web whether that’s through specific news stations like you mentioned in your blog such as CP24, CityNews etc, that has their own website online where you can access information from. Also, you mentioned in your post how the use of different social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter can also decrease the quality of information of the news as people are relying there information based on their friends tweet or Facebook status, as opposed to getting information from the actual source itself which is through watching the news on either television, the internet etc.
ReplyDeleteI understand and see your point of view but kindly disagree I don’t think that it has increased the quality of news we receive. Like when you said we don’t know which information is correct and which isn’t. I think that these citizen journalists are a big part of that problem. With that said I think we will continue to turn to larger news broadcasters in hopes of receiving the truth behind the news we are hearing from all these available sources. We are a generation of options we like being able to compare and have multiple sources to receive one thing but our news is a tricky thing. Thanks for the outlook though I enjoyed the read :)
